My website was recently (02/01/2013) "attacked" by some malware.
Essentially this hacked the .htaccess file trying to redirect visitors
towards some weird websites. I have now fixed this,
hopefully for good. According to Google Webmaster reports, this has not
caused any harm to visitors. Yet, depending on your browser,
you
might have received some warnning messages. Apologies for any
inconvenience.

Two coauthored papers analyse the relationship between
immigration and well-being. IZA DP 6630 (
link)
explores the impact of immigration on the well-being of
natives in Germany. The analysis reveals
that immigration in a region positively affect the well-being
of natives. The effect increases up to a certain level of economic and
social assimilation of the immigrants and is essentially zero when
immigrants are fully integrated. Using data on China, IZA DP
6631 (
link)
proposes an approach to empirically analyse the effect of remittances
on the utility of migrants. The effect of remittances on well-being is
found to be positive and varies with the characteristics of migrants.
The analysis also reveals that both altruistic and contractual
motivations are behind the remittance behaviour among rural-to-urban
migrants.

My recent coauthored IZA DP 6075 summarizes research on the
topic of welfare migration (
link). The paper concludes that
although economic theory predicts that welfare generosity might affect
immigration, the empirical evidence is rather mixed. Possible
explanations for the existence of such mixed such as the presence of
different migration regimes, and the reverse causality between welfare
spending and immigration are explored.

[$] The
relationship between welfare and immigration is
investigated in my recent coauthored IZA DP 6075 (
link).
The paper
analyses whether more generous unemployment benefits attract more
immigrants in
European Union countries. Findings indicate that changes in
benefit
spending are not associated with changes in immigrant inflows from
within or
outside the EU. These findings are corroborated by the evidence that
unemployed
immigrants, when compared to native peers, are somewhat less likely to
perceive
benefits. On the other hand, other factors such as the
presence of social
networks and changes in macroeconomic fundamentals are found to explain
immigration inflows.

[$] The
European Parliament's Committee on Employment and Social Affairs
recently commissioned a research team lead by IZA a study to
analyse the process
of immigrants' integration in the EU and its impact on the labor
market.
The study gives an account on the current situation of immigrants in
the EU, investigates the role of restrictive immigration policies and
explores the existence of practical barriers to integration. Finally, a
description of best practices (both at the national and
company level) which have been successful in promoting the integration
of immigrants, preventing discrimination and improving their social
inclusion, is given. The report is available from the European
Parliament (

website
and as IZA research report (

[$] "Self-Employment
of Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China"
is the title of the recent IZA DP 5805 (
link).
The paper analyses whether immigrants from rural China choose
self-employment because they cannot find a better job as employee or,
instead because they want to pursue a business opportunity. The paper
is based on the 2008 wave of the Rural to Urban Migration in China
(RUMiC) survey. The findings indicate that self-employed migrants are
positively selected on their characteristics, which suggests
that
migrants are not "segregated" into self-employment because they cannot
access better job as employee. Furthermore, additional evidence shows
that the majority of self-employed migrants perceive that their
earnings would have been lower had they worked in paid employment and
that they are satisfied with their current employment. With the fast
growth of the private sector and the parallel massive
migration from rural to urban areas, this research question is of
crucial importance in the context of the Chinese economy.

[$] IZA DP
n.5410
entitled "Is the
Minimum Wage a Pull Factor for Imigrants?"
is now available
on line (
link).
Using US data, in this paper I show that low-skilled
immigrants move
to the states with the largest increases in minimum wages.
Although the impact is limited and explains only partially
the phenomenon of unskilled immigration that characterised the US
during the
1990s, the paper sheds lights on an interesting mechanism linking
welfare
generosity and immigration patterns. Enjoy the reading!
